Separatist shutdown hits Kashmir to protest Sonia visit

Life across the Kashmir Valley was under the pressure Saturday following a shutdown called by nationalist leader Syed Ali Geelani hard on a day Congress president Sonia Gandhi visited the state. The establishment has introduced limits in the old city of Srinagar.


Geelani has called the closure against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) presidential visit to the state.


Gandhi is to inaugurate a tribal cultural center in Jammu and address of a function organized by the Gujjar community there. She had previously canceled Srinagar leg of the appointment.


Shops and other businesses, educational institutions and public transportation is still off the road and attendance in government offices and banks was low in Srinagar city.


The establishment has made significant deployment of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the sensitive areas under five police stations in Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal and Maharajgunj of the old city to make sure law and order.


"Preventive measures are taken to protect civilian lives and property," said a police officer said here.


Reports coming here from other district H.Q. Ganderbal, Bandipora, Kupwara, Badgam, Bara Mullah, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam that life had been adversely affected by the separatist blackout.
