Vaiko fumes over dam, Kerala calls him ignorant

Kerala calls him ignorant

Tamil Nadu MDMK leader Vaiko Friday warn the Kerala not to pull down Mullaperiyar dam, the state's Left Democratic Front accused him of whipping up needless passion.

The MDMK infertile all vehicle traffic for 12 points in Kerala-Tamil Nadu border and said the Kerala administration should not build a new dam to replace the aging Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki district.

"A fear hang-up is created by (Kerala Chief Minister VS) Achuthanandan and his government on the safety of Mullaperiyar dam will break down and many Keralites would drown," Vaiko told his group at Chavadi on the edge near here.

"Mullaperiyar dam is stronger than the Idukki dam. I will warn that if Achuthanandan Mullaperiyar dam is affected, belongings will be bad. Do not forget that we provide all the necessary things from the milk for rice to Kerala, he said.

Kerala Water capital Minister N.K. Premachandran said the MDMK leader was either unaware of the facts or effort to make political capital by whipping up Tamil passion.

"We never said we will not give water to Tamil Nadu. He tries to provoke Kerala, but we will not be aggravated. One should note that an amicable state of affairs is prepared by the apex court, the central and two governments. This is a gimmick that Vaiko to regain their lost political power, "he said.

Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been on the edge of the dam built under an accord signed in 1886 between the then Maharaja of Travancore and the British management.

While the dam is in Kerala's Idukki district, portion the Tamil Nadu. Both states were carved on linguistic basis in 1956.

In recent years, claimed the Tamil Nadu that the storage ability of the dam to be raised from 136 feet (41.5 m) to 142 feet (43 m) to meet the rising demand for water for irrigation.

But Kerala needs a new dam as a recent study conduct by IIT Roorkee found that the dam would collapse if an earthquake measure 6.5 on the Richter scale occurs.

In February the Supreme Court recognized a high power group to discuss all issues related to the dam, counting security and raise sea levels 136 feet beyond the Kerala command for a new dam.

  1. As Mr.Vaiko says, this is not against people of kerala, coz keralites who are living in TN very well know that they are much safer in TN and we tamilans never disturbed their well-being, so, to ensure the smooth running of the livelyhood of keralites in TN, they should also extend their support in our well-being, by not doing any harm n stop planning/building of Periar dam, which will affect 2 crores of tamilians and their lakhs of acres of cultivation..... HOPE KERALA GOVT. AND PEOPLE REALISE

  2. Kerala didn't say it would deny water to TN if ever a new dam is built. Even the IIT guys say mullaperiyar dam is unstable, why should Govt. of kerala take a risk ? As long water exists in these dams Keralites would supply water to Tamilans.
