Confirmed: H1N1 cases on the rise

H1N1

Pandemic influenza H1N1 cases continued to be on the rise in the southern states, especially Kerala, during the last two weeks.

In all, 266 lab-confirmed cases were reported in Kerala last week out of a total 345 confirmed cases in the country.

Eighteen cases were reported in Karnataka, 16 in Tamil Nadu and eight in Andhra Pradesh. Seven cases of the lab-confirmed deaths were reported in Kerala and two death cases reported in Andhra Pradesh last week.

All the 345 cases reported during the last week were indigenous, according to officials in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

“Pandemic influenza H1N1 cases started showing an increasing trend after the monsoon hit Kerala on May 15,’’ an official said.

On the request of the Kerala Government, a three member team was deputed to the state to help the government tackle the situation.

The Kerala Government had sought Centre’s help in supplying drugs and vaccines and the ministry had instructed the concerned to dispatch the same.

Kerala had already received 45,000 doses of vaccine.

The utilisation of health care workers is about 92 percent.
