EC notices to Reddy brothers over ‘offices of profit’

Reddy brothers

Election Commission Monday issued notices to three Karnataka ministers — mining barons G Karunakar Reddy and G Janardhan Reddy and their associate Health Minister B Sreeramulu — on a complaint by Congress legislator K C Kondaiah, seeking their disqualification for using “political positions to further their business interests”.

The complaint, however, was not filed with the Election Commission by Kondaiah. He had sent it to Governor H R Bharadwaj. The Governor summoned the ministers but they questioned his authority “to act like a court of law”. The Governor then forwarded the complaint to the EC.

EC has asked the ministers to reply by July 15 to the charge that they are holding offices of profit.

Karunakar Reddy and Sreeramulu are MLAs while Janardhan Reddy is a member of the legislative council.
