There are three main stages of children’s language acquisition. They are the first three years, the pre-school years and the school years.

The first three years
In the first three years, children will start cooing and babbling in the first 3-10 months of age.

Cooing sounds include the sounds that contain consonants and vowels such as [k], [p], [a] and [i] sounds.

Babbling, on the other hand refers to syllable sounds such as [bu] and [ga].

At the age of 12-18 months, children reach the holophrastic or one word stage. For example, children can utter the words mommy, baby, etc
The next stage is the two word stage that happens at 18-20 months of age. Even though the words are ungrammatically correct, they do make sense and the messages are conveyed. Some examples include me want, mommy pretty, etc
