Fifteen killed in bus accident in central Philippines

Fifteen killed

Fifteen people were killed and dozens injured when an overloaded bus crashed into a concrete wall in the central Philippines, police said Sunday.

Police said the brakes of the bus failed, forcing the driver to slam the vehicle into the wall along a highway in Toledo City in Cebu province, 585 kilometres south of Manila.

The bus was negotiating a blind curve when the accident occurred.

Investigators said the bus, which was allowed to carry only 53 passengers, was carrying more than 60 people at the time of the accident.

Ten victims died on the spot and five others died while being treated in hospital. Forty-eight others suffered various injuries.

It was the fourth fatal accident in three weeks in Cebu. On June 13, 21 people were killed when a tourist bus plunged into a 15-metre ravine in Balamban town.

On June 22, four people were killed when a truck lost its brakes and ploughed through a crowd in Toledo City. Two days later, 12 people were hurt when a bus tipped over in Sogod town.
