Cyclone Laila weakens, leaves 16 dead

Andhra Pradesh breathed a sigh of release after the cyclone Laila damaged before the shore about 30 km from Bapatla in Guntur district on Thursday afternoon, but left 16 people dead, snowed under thousands of homes, snapped power in many areas and threw rail and road traffic out of gear in the coastal region of condition.

Cyclone, which has suffered winds 111 km (69 miles) an hour, landed about 100 miles south of the city of Vijayawada to 11:30 local time yesterday, said the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon caution middle.

Cyclone Aila to bring heavy rains to north TN, Andhra coasts

Coastal areas of north Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are predictable to witness heavy rainfall and very strong winds as Cyclone "Laila" intensify in the Bay of Bengal about 700 km southeast of Chennai.

"Today's ecological circumstances and weather models show the system is likely to intensify further and move in a west-northwesterly direction towards the Andhra Pradesh coast," an advisory issued by India Meteorological section said today.
