Clashes in Indian Kashmir over 'staged' killings

Kashmir

Police in Indian Kashmir fired teargas Saturday to disperse thousands of villagers protested against what they said was staged killing of three Muslims by the refuge forces.

The end of last month, said the military had banned an infiltration bid by killing three militants along the de facto border that shares Kashmir sandwiched between South Asian rivals India and Pakistan.

But three families in the northern district of Bara Mullah said the men killed were "innocent" relations who had disappeared three extra days to.

Friday the establishment ordered a probe into the incident and also dug up three bodies, which were found to be those of the gone astray men.

Thousands of villagers took to the streets Saturday in the men's home village in Bara Mullah, chanting: "We want freedom" and "Hang the Killers."

Police fired tear gas shells and baton-charged demonstrators. Eyewitnesses said that 14 people were injured in the clashes.
"We had to use power as they wanted to block the highway," a police officer said.

The Indian army has ordered an internal exploration of the killings.

A revolt against Indian rule has left more than 47,000 people died in Kashmir since 1989.
