Mach 6 record broken by scramjet X-51A Waverider missile

X-51A

Boeing X-51 Wave Rider has made aviation history by implementation the longest ever supersonic burning * Ramjet-powered aircraft. The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) flew approximately three and a half minutes in the air out of the Southern California coast Wednesday and reached a height of around 70,000 feet and frames hypersonic (Mach 5) speed.

The X-51 scramjet Wave Rider is being developed for the Air Force Research Laboratory and Defense Advanced Research project Agency (DARPA) from Boeing and Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne.

Aircraft was finished after 200 seconds, after "a vehicle anomaly occurs" but even 200 seconds at Mach 6 was enough to break the preceding record of 12 seconds. The scramjet engine on the X-51a Wave Rider missile was designed by Pratt & Whitney signed a partnership with the USAF, the protection Advanced Research Projects Agency, NASA and Boeing for the agenda.

Pratt & Whitney said that scramjet technology used for the X-51a Wave Rider can also be used for defense and aerospace, among other situation. For more on this story go to The Christian Science Monitor.
