Michael Vick was not involved or present when a shooting took place outside a Virginia Beach nightclub where he had celebrated his birthday, his lawyer said. At a football camp he is holding at Hampton University, Vick was asked by a reporter whether he had any comment on the incident. “Watch what you do,” Vick responded. “Pick and choose your friends carefully. You just can’t put yourself in vulnerable situations.” The N.F.L. said it would investigate the shooting.
The shooting victim was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening, the police said. A spokesman for Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital said that Quanis Phillips, one of the co-defendants in Vick’s federal dogfighting case, was admitted overnight, but he could not discuss the nature of Phillips’s stay. ¶A semiprofessional player has admitted he slammed a referee in the face with his helmet at the end of an unruly game. Running back Leon Woods pleaded guilty to first-degree assault for seriously injuring the referee Peter McCabe Jr. in Rochester last October. Woods, 23, will be sentenced in August to 10 years in prison. (AP)
