Southwest Airlines Employee Makes Gruesome Discovery

Southwest Airlines

During a routine security check, a US airline worker in Little Rock, Arkansas discovered between 40 and 60 human heads. officials are investigating whether they are part of an illegal trade in human body parts.

Investigators are determined to make sure these specimens here aren’t a part of a black market or underground trade in human body parts. The container was being shipped to a company called Medtronic which maintains that it is common to ship body parts for medical education and research.
US federal law prohibits the sale of human body parts, however, suppliers can be reimbursed for expenses such as shipping and handling, storage and procuring the body parts in the case of legitimate research. This can actually be a quite lucrative business.

Trafficking in body parts illegally harvested from our deceased loved ones, is a lucrative, underground business driven by growing demand for human bones and tissue This is a thriving business due very little federal or state regulation over the use of human tissue for research and because legal ambiguities allow body part providers to profit from the dead. The illegal harvesting of skin, fingernails, tendons and other non-organ body parts is occurring in part because of unprecedented demand.

“Body snatchers” provide bones, tendons and other body parts to tissue banks, research facilities and other buyers. According to Annie Cheney, author of Body Brokers: Inside America’s Underground Trade in Human Remains, they get paid: $600 for a brain, as much as $850 for an elbow, up to $850 for a hand.

In May of 2008, Henry Reid, the former director of UCLA’s willed body program, was indicted for selling body parts to businessman Ernest Nelson, who then resold them to medical, pharmaceutical and hospital research companies. This is just oneof many cases that have come up. There was a case in New York where A funeral home operater had illegally harvested and sold bone and other body parts to medical research companies. Then in the cases where the bones were removed he just replaced them with PVC pipe so the families of the deceased wouldn’t notice at the funerals.
