Kunal Kapoor has been missing from the silver screen for a year. But the actor says he’s not missed any action. He’s learning to fly a plane, training in the sporting activity of parkour, working on his vocals to play a singer and — hold your breath — beefing up for a superhero role.
“I wasn’t on a sabbatical. In fact, it’s been the most productive year of my life,” he says. Kapoor, who was last seen in Aaja Nachle in 2007, has only made special appearances since then — in the 2008 films in Bachna Ae Haseeno and Welcome To Sajjanpur.
“I got the chance to work on myself as an actor. For my action film Doga, I was learning parkour,” says Kapoor, who will next be seen as a young politician in Rahul Dholakia’s Lamhaa. The 34-year-old has also been learning to fly a single engine Cessna 172 plane at Sagar in Madhya Pradesh. “That was something I really wanted to do since a long time,” he says, adding that he’s now trying for a pilot’s license as well.
Talking about bulking up for filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s Doga, Kapoor says, “Doga is a character who is 25 kilos of muscle more than what I am. I’ve just begun working towards it.”
He’s also working on his vocals for the film Chamkila. “I play a singer in the movie. I am terrible at it, but I hope I’ll get better with training,” he says. “I’ve never felt so sure about myself as an actor. Life’s about discovering a lot of things,” he says.
