Texas dodges worst of Hurricane Alex

Hurricane Alex

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — South Texas has avoided the worst of Hurricane Alex.

The National Weather Service in Brownsville said flash flooding and coastal flooding were a concern through Thursday afternoon, as Alex weakened after making landfall late Wednesday in northern Mexico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Alex has been downgraded to a Category 1 storm. As of 4 a.m. Thursday, Alex was about 20 miles north of Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, and 160 miles southwest of Brownsville. It had sustained winds of 80 mph.

No injuries were reported in Texas as the system drenched the Rio Grande Valley, but spared the state from damage that often accompanies hurricanes.

The Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway, linking South Padre Island to the rest of Texas, remained closed Thursday.
