Oil giant BP said last night it was finally begun to contain a catastrophic leak in the Gulf of Mexico nearly a month after a rig exploded.
A tube en mil far were in place on the seabed to attract many of the raw from a blown well with a tanker.
BP's Mark Proegler said the device was sucking most of the oil spill.
His team had been fighting since Friday with robotic submarines to establish 21inchwide tube (53cms) in place. A relief well nearby, is believed to be the permanent solution that has been drilled, but will not be ready for months.
At least 210,000 liters of oil has jumped into the bay, then rig blew up on 20 April killed 11 people.
Scientists yesterday warned that oil spills will kill marine life with injuries that could continue for at least a decade.
