Cop shot dead in Hyderabad, high alert in city
A policeman was killed and two others were injured when two persons on a motorcycle opened fire on police picked in the old city of Hyderabad on Friday. A high alert has been sound all through the city.
The incident occurred this evening on the Volga Hotel in Shahali Banda area, about one km from the historic Charminar and Mecca Masjid.
Eyewitnesses said that two persons on a bike opened fire on a police car picked as part of security before the third birthday of the explosion at the historic Mecca Masjid (May 1918).Assailants fled after the attack on policemen.
Constable Ramesh, in Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP), died while moving to Osmania Hospital, but Thurs the 2nd police officers were treated for their injuries.
Police have put barricade in several places in the city and began checking vehicles and frisking people.
The incident sent shock waves when it came despite ongoing searches by the police for over two weeks in the middle of intelligence warnings about possible terrorist attacks, and close on the heels of the arrest of a suspected terrorist.
Last year, the second anniversary of the explosion, was a policeman killed and another wounded in a similar attack when assailants opened fire on police at Falaknuma area of the old city.
Police believed Viqaruddin, an alleged terror operative, was involved. Two policemen were wounded 3/12/2008 in an attempt to arrest Viqaruddin as one of two people who follow him, opened fire on policemen. The trio managed to escape.
The bomb during Friday prayers in the 17th century mosque on May 18, 2007 killed nine people.Five people died in the subsequent police firing on demonstrators outside the mosque.
Police arrest a 03.05 suspected terrorist suspects belong to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LET). Police said 34 years old Mohammed Zia-ul-Haq was planning to cause explosion in busy areas of the city.
