Hyderabad: TRS MP Vijayashanti arrested

TRS MP

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MP and film actress Vijayashanti was arrested in Hyderabad on charges of making inflammatory remarks during a recent party meeting.

The meeting was organised in connection with July 27 by-polls to 12 Assembly segments in the Telangana region. She had allegedly made the remarks against those opposed to the formation of a separate Telangana state.

Banaraja Hills police had registered a case against her and the cops showed up twice at Vijayashanti's house to arrest yesterday but couldn't find her. The actor and MLA emerged from her home in MLA Colony minutes after the police left empty-handed after their evening visit.

At that time, supporters of Vijayashanti said, "She is not in the house at all. Even then the police has barged into the house, breaking the door."

Making a dramatic appearance (after the police left, of course), the actor complained, "I am unwell even then the police is to arrest me, without a warrant."

It's a departure from her reel-life persona - she was called Lady Bachchan for her film roles where she took on the system, especially politicians, to win justice.

Her current run-in with the police and the Election Commission comes after she allegedly is made inflammatory remarks while campaigning for the forthcoming by-elections in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. At a party workers' meeting at the TRS office on Wednesday, Vijayashanti allegedly asked Telangana supporters to "chop down the foes of Telangana".

The issue of whether Telangana should be made a separate state has dominated local politics since late last year.

The Chief Electoral Officer I V Subbharao had said on Thursday that suo moto action will be taken against her under the provisions of the Representation of People Act for the alleged remarks.

A case has been registered against the actor under IPC sections 153-A and (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth and residence) and 505(2) (Statements creating or promoting enmity, ill-will or hatred between classes), the police said.
