Maoists gundown 4 CPI-M workers in Bengal

Four CPI-M group on Thursday shot and killed by suspected Maoists and their bodies deserted on the state highway at Belpahari near Lalgarh in West Midnapore district of ultras threaten to step up their murderous movement.

Ashok Ahir, Swapan Ahir, Ahir and Sanatan Nazrul Mir was shot and killed by close range early today as police informers "and the bodies left on the herring-Bankura road near Anthele village, police said.

The middle-aged CPI-M supporters were picked up from their home to Chandabila village near Binpur police station by a group of 20 armed Maoist cadres after midnight.

Sisir Maity, deceased's brother, said that the group broke into the house through the back door and met all seen before they shot and killed his brother.

"We were asleep at the time when abruptly some people started beating on the doors. We were afraid. So some people are encouraged to open their doors, but we have not, then they broke the back of our home, and after the affected everyone, and finally they shot him, "says Maity.

The rebels claimed that Himangshu Maity was an informant for the security armed forces.

Maoists have spread to rural pockets in 20 of India's 28 states, their crusade has upset commerce forecast of billions of dollars in mining and related industry.

Thousands have been killed in the Maoist rebellion that began in late 1960, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has warned that insurgents have managed to maintain support among a segment of society, and remains the country's largest internal security threat.
