While the student population at the Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad) has soared to an all-time high this week, the sex ratio has dipped slightly compared to last year. The fair sex comprises 10.25% of the PGP batch of 2012, vis-à-vis 15.16% of the batch of 2011.
Also, with the total student strength on the campus being around 1,050, another ratio that has taken a beating this year is the student-faculty ratio, reaching a low 11:1.
Faculty crunch continues to dog the premier management institute, like it does all B-schools globally. The student-faculty ratio of 11:1 is despite the fact that 28 additional faculty have been recruited at IIMA in the past two years, and the retirement age has been extended from 62 years to 65.
"Our faculty strength ideally needs to be around 110, but we stand at 91 currently. The highest faculty count was at 94, a few years back," IIMA director Prof Samir Barua said on Wednesday.
But the gloom ends here. Starting December 11 this year, IIMA enters its 50th year, and has planned year-long golden jubilee celebrations. "A series of conferences has been planned to showcase the work done by the faculty in social areas and vis-à-vis government policies", said professor Barua.
A big alumni gathering of all IIMA students is being held in the end of December and over thousands of students are expected to attend, said Prof Barua, adding that introspection and setting the agenda for the next ten years will also be carried out by the institute.
