Mixed martial arts fighter Michael Kirkham died Monday after complications from injuries received during his first professional MMA fighting competition in South Carolina. He was 30.
Kirkham, was in a MMA fighting match at the USC Aiken Convocation Center Saturday where took repeated blows to the head, prompting referees to stop the fight. Kirkham never regained consciousness and died at Aiken Regional Medical Center, reported MMAFighting.com.
"Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with his family, other than that I have no comment,” fight promoter Sam King told MMAFighting.
Kirkham was nicknamed “Tree” due to his body type as the lightweight fighter stood at a towering 6-9. He was the captain of the fighting team "Fayetteville Independents” and his colleagues said he will be missed.
Kirkham is the second MMA fighter to die from injuries sustained in a professional fight. In 2007, Sam Vasquez, who was severely injured during a match in Houston, became comatose after the fight for 42 days before his death at the age of 35.
