Pixable Adds a Timeline of Facebook Photos You Liked & Commented On

Remember all of those photos that caught your eye in your Facebook news feed? Probably not. But startup Pixable wants to help change that. On Thursday, it added a “my likes & comments” category to its photo-sharing apps.

The iPhone, iPad and browser apps connect with Facebook and sort you and your friends’ photos into categories like “most popular” or “family updates.” It also makes piles of the most popular Flickr and Instagram photos.

With the new category, users also get a log of what was most interesting to them in real time on Facebook. Since I’m personally a fairly conservative liker on Facebook, the collection of photos in the pile turned out to be something of a highlight reel.

Pixable is one of the only photo startups that is focusing on aggregating and browsing online photos rather creating a photo service of its own — a smart strategy in a crowded startup space that big players like Twitter have recently entered.

Here’s how to start using Facebook Video Calling now!

Facebook launched a bunch of new features Wednesday, including group chat, a redesigned chat user list, and the biggest of all, video chat via a partnership with Skype. It’s this last one that will have the biggest implications for most average Mac users.

I used Skype video calling approximately three minutes after it launched (with pal and web developer Wes Bos), and it worked perfectly. Installing the plugin on my iMac required a tiny Java app download that’s virtually foolproof to use, and making and receiving calls is as simple as clicking a few buttons and confirming you want to share video.

Facebook’s new video calling feature is specifically designed for each browser and OS combination out there. Unfortunately, Facebook didn’t account for those people using Lion (You’ve got a week Facebook).

The fix is easy however: Just change your Browser user agent to something a little more traditional and you are video chatting.

For instance, in Safari, hit up Safari 5.1-Mac and you are golden.

Skype’s Mac client also isn’t winning over any fans in terms of its design, mainly because that design feels unnecessarily cumbersome. Facebook’s Skype integration is the opposite of that: It’s invisible, blending in with Facebook’s web presence without drawing too much attention to itself or changing the Facebook experience that users are comfortable with.

For both the above reasons, I think Facebook Video Calling will unseat Skype as the video chat option of choice for Mac users, at least when it comes to consumers. Pro users might need the advanced Skype features offered through the dedicated Mac app, but some of those might make it to Facebook eventually, too, it was suggested at today’s press conference. And things like calling out to landlines and cell phones might be better handled through Skype’s smartphone clients anyway.

Facebook has announced Video Calling and group chat, along with other improvements to Messages. Video Calling will be available to everyone over the next few weeks, but if you don’t want to wait, you can get it now.

Skype And Facebook Will Launch Video Chat Browser Next Week

Delhi University on Facebook

New Delhi, May 30 (IANS) Providing anxious students and their parents a much-needed respite during the admission season, Delhi University (DU) Monday launched its own page on Facebook for direct interaction with the students, an official said.

Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh, in his message on the page, said: "We are today launching our Facebook page, a dedicated email id is also in place. I'll do my best to personally answer several queries."

Facebook PR firm's Google smear tactics described as 'creepy'

The new thing being passed around the internet is "Google-gate." It refers to a campaign that Facebook supposedly created to smear Google by using one of the biggest PR agencies in the world, Burson-Marsteller, to send out requests for bloggers and perhaps some actual journalists to print disparaging information regarding Google's loose attitude about privacy.

If people think this sort of thing is a new idea or out of the ordinary, they should get a clue. Companies pull these stunts all the time. It's just rare that it becomes a public issue. The difference in this case is that the two PR guys at Burson-Marsteller are actually ex-reporters, new to PR, and obviously less than circumspect.

You see, FrontierVille and its ilk do not feel like games at all. Instead they seem like lucrative business models that are being sold and packaged in the form of a game. There is a big difference. When you talk to most designers of great games they will tell you something along the lines of, “We make the kind of games we would want to play.” That never feels like the case with Zynga games. To me, a game like FrontierVille says, “We make the kind of games we think can best attract and monetize the most number of people with credit cards who don’t mind dropping $10 or $20 once in a while for a virtual tchotchke.”
