• News of the World is shutting down in the wake of allegations that newspaper representatives hacked the phones of news subjects, including a missing teenager, Milly Dowler, who was later found dead. It was also revealed this week that relatives of British troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan may have also been targeted. The hacking cases at the paper have previously involved politicians and celebrities, including actress Sienna Miller, who pocketed $160,000 in an out-of court settlement. (CNET and The Guardian)

• The verdict is in on the legal battle between Apple and Amazon: For now, Apple loses, Amazon wins. A judge refused to grant Apple's request for a preliminary injunction to stop Amazon from using the term "Appstore." The reason being that while the term isn't exactly too generic, Apple needs a better case as to why Amazon's use of the term would confuse customers. On that note, keep in mind the Apple App Store hit 15 billion downloads. (CNET)
• Apple reportedly gets the new iPhone 5 ready for a third-quarter launch. There's a rumor that Apple has asked suppliers to build 25 million units of the next iPhone by August. (The Wall Street Journal and CNET)

A Preview of Gmail’s New Look

We get a lot of great feedback about how Gmail helps you be more efficient, keep in touch with family and friends, and get work done. We’ve saved you from forgetting attachments and made sure that you got the right Bob. Over the years, adding countless features to Gmail has made it an increasingly powerful communication hub, but along the way the interface has also become more cluttered and complex.

That’s one of the reasons we’re embarking on a series of interface updates to help strip out unnecessary clutter and make Gmail as beautiful as it is powerful. This is part of a Google-wide effort to bring you an experience that’s more focused, elastic, and effortless across all of our products. The changes are not going to happen all at once. We know that you love and care about Gmail as much as we do, and we’ll be working on these upgrades gradually over the next few months to allow plenty of time to understand and incorporate your feedback into the evolving design.

We’re kicking things off with two new themes for you to try out as a sort of sneak peek at what we’re up to. Starting today, you’ll see the “Preview” and “Preview (Dense)” themes in the Themes tab in Gmail Settings. Why two themes? Our new interface will eventually expand dynamically to accommodate different screen sizes and user preferences, but until then you can pick the information density that you prefer.

Here’s what one of the new themes currently looks like:

If you poke around you’ll hopefully find a lot to like and a much cleaner, modern look but also few rough edges. In particular, some Labs features may look a little strange in the new themes. We plan to fix these issues as we roll out changes in the coming months. You can also expect some updated themes that embody the same design principles but are better suited to working in a dark environment, use a different color palette, or include the illustrations that we know many of you love to see around your inbox.

Look out for these and other new features over the next few months. In the meantime, try out the new themes as a preview of the future of Gmail and let us know what you think.

P.S. Like Gmail, Google Calendar is also getting a new look. You’ll see it automatically within the next few days so there’s no need to turn it on, and we’ll also continue to make improvements there in the coming months. Google Chrome tops 20 per cent market share

Google Inc's Chrome Web browser has grabbed more than 20 perc ent of global market share, while Microsoft Corp's long-time leader Internet Explorer has slipped below 50 per cent, according to Internet statistics firm StatCounter.

A seven-fold increase in usage in the last 12 months is a boost for Google, which is trying to convert its dominance in Web search into operating systems and mobile software, bringing it into direct competition with Microsoft.

Google's Chrome browser, launched in December 2008, took 20.7 per cent of the global market in June, according to StatCounter, up from 2.8 per cent a year ago.

In the same time, it said the various versions of Internet Explorer fell to 44 per cent from a 59 per cent share a year ago, while Mozilla's Firefox dipped slightly to 28 per cent from 30 per cent.

Google's gains come as the company makes a concerted push into browser-centric, or "cloud" computing. In May, Google launched its long-awaited Chromebook, a laptop that works almost entirely on software accessed via the Internet, rather than installed on the machine. This is a direct challenge to software leaders Microsoft and Apple.

Microsoft, which controlled as much as 95 percent of the market in the early 2000s after crushing browser pioneer Netscape, has seen its market share ebb after disputes with antitrust regulators in the United States and Europe, which accused Microsoft of abusing its monopoly in operating systems to dominate the browser market.

The resolutions of those disputes effectively prohibited the world's biggest software company from making Internet Explorer the default browser in its dominant Windows operating system.

Microsoft, which is developing the IE10 version of its browser, settled the issue with European Union regulators in December 2009, pledging to give consumers better access to rival browsers.

StatCounter, based in Dublin, Ireland, says its statistics are based on data collected from a sample of more than 15 billion page views per month from more than 3 million websites.

Net Applications, a more widely used browser statistics source, estimates that Google has not increased its share quite as much.

According to its market share data for June, Microsoft's Internet Explorer leads with 53.7 per cent, Firefox has 21.7 per cent and Chrome 13.1 per cent. Apple Inc's Safari has 7.5 per cent and Norway's Opera Software 1.7 per cent.

Advertisers are weighing in. Covario, a San Diego-based search engine marketing firm, writes:

“Our position then, as it is now, is that there is no antitrust case in paid search due to the way pricing is set in the market for paid search keywords. Google acts as market facilitator, not market enforcer. [...] [Google is] quite transparent when it comes to how they determine Quality Score, and advertisers who do not benefit from this understanding either have not put in the work, or are simply unhappy with the result (they are bidding on irrelevant keywords, which hurts quality score, which raises price – those are the publicized rules of the auction – play or don’t play).”
