Devvarman out but India's hope happy with Roddick effect

Devvarman

Somdev Devvarman French Open escapade ended Sunday at what time he lost a tough first round match next to Swiss Marco Chiudinelli.

India's first men play in the main singles draw at Roland Garros for 13 years, curved out 6-3 3-6 6-3 3-6 6-3, but Texas-based 25-year-old is persuaded that he is near to smash into the world top 100

Under the former world number one Andy Roddick, as his practice partner to help secure their chances.

"We are on different schedules, but I play with Andy when I can," Devvarman who grew up playing on the "slippery gravel tracks in Chennai, before studying in the U.S., told Reuters.

"When his competition starts at Roland Garros I want to see from the stands. We spent the last two off-seasons as one and skilled hard with him.

"It's amusing to see a guy who has been the top 10 eight years in a line. To see what he goes from side to side and how much work he puts in, and how powerful he is. He kind of leads me by instance.

"It's nice to see a guy like that go to job."

World number 109 Devvarman who came from side to side qualifying here, as he did before they reach the subsequent round in last year's U.S. Open, said he hoped that this growth will help India produce more players capable of challenging the big bang.

But he plays up his role as a flag bearing the Indian men's tennis in spite of fervent about Davis Cup, where India faces Brazil later this day.

"Of course, I represent my country when I go on the pitch," Devvarman who got hooked on tennis by watching Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras on the TV said. But more importantly, I'm out there competing for myself.

"There is more to realize that all the effort I put in has paid off. It's high-quality if people are ready.

"India has three players in the top 400 now, but we cannot stop. I hope I better will inspire some more young children to play the pastime."
