India bailed out China from US-EU ambush at Copenhagen: Ramesh
India jumped out of the separation of China during the Copenhagen climate change negotiations and saved it from getting an ambush attack from U.S. and EU, which wanted it to sign conformity on control of emissions, much against his will, "said surroundings Minister Jairam Ramesh today.
In Copenhagen speak Chinese in their heart of hearts know that we saved them from separation, he said, addressing the Foreign journalists Club of China. The developed countries tried to get China to the world's worst emitter of conservatory gases, created by "any international union to grant legal status" to India made this impossible.
"With our knowledge of English and our more cussedness in negotiating skills, we drove the Chinese out of many difficult situations. Chinese know India was important that China was not isolated in Copenhagen," said Ramesh.
What has proved to be a "Copenhagen spirit" of amity between India and China has a strategic significance far beyond the issue of climate change, "he said. On the other hand, the U.S. very uneasy with the new spirit of "bonhomie between India and China," he said.
"Americans have no confidence in the Chinese data," said Ramesh while explaining why Washington was pushing for a strict system of verification on the issue of emissions. But BASIC countries and Brazil, South Africa, India and China eventually forced the Western countries to to accept the standard of equality, while the draft final harmony.
The agreement reached in December last year was on the whole an agreement between U.S. President Barack Obama and BASIC, while the Europeans were completely ignored. But for India's interference there would have been a pact and Obama would have accused China of "villain".
