Crews probe Guatemala sinkhole as neighbors flee

Guatemala

A bottomless, and almost completely round sinkhole swallow an entire cross in Guatemala City during a tropical storm, spooking people in the area, but exciting geologists.

The hole is 66 feet (20 meters) across and throwing almost 100 feet (30 meters) deep.

Geologists said Tuesday that the circular shape not obligatory a cave formation under, but what caused the sinkhole was still a anonymity.

"I can tell you what it is: It is not a geological fault, and it is not the product of an earthquake," said David Monterroso, a geophysics wangle at the National Museum Disaster Management Agency. "This is all we know. We must come down. "

The sinkhole formed Saturday and drank a clothing factory about three miles (two kilometers) from the place where a similar sinkhole three years ago.

Neighbors say it was a miracle no factory workers died.

"The boys were lucky," resident Honorary Oliva said. "They left the six in the afternoon, an hour before the earth opened up."

Neighbours said a weekend security guard was also spared because he had left to take care of his house, which flooded after heavy rain as Tropical Storm Agatha bore down on Central America. The storm has killed at least 180 people.

Some neighbors believe that one or two people may be missing, but authorities said no deaths were reported.

2007 sinkhole killed three people and swallowed several houses in the same area. It was blamed on rain and a T-sewage flows, but it is too early to say whether these problems are to blame this time, says Monterroso, who studied the earlier incident.

Police and soldiers stood guard around the sinkhole to prevent the curious from coming too close. Most people who live close at hand have moved out, afraid the gap will grow and swallow more homes.

"We will not wait," said one man who refused to give his name. "We have already hired elsewhere, and we go away."
