An earthquake struck last night in the Southern California and Mexico border region measuring 5.7 magnitude according to the U.S. Geological Survey. People felt the quake from San Diego to Orange County and Los Angeles. The quake occurred at 9:26 pm PDT and the centre was near to Ocotillo in Imperial County, approximately 85 miles east of San Diego.
A seismologist at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Egill Hauksson, said that it was an aftershock from the Easter Sunday quake in Baja, California, saying “Aftershocks can go on for months and years,” according to a report by Elliot Spagat on The Associated Press. 45 aftershocks have already occurred since the 5.7 quake yesterday, one at magnitude 4.5.
Louis Fuentes, chairman of the Imperial County board of supervisors, said that they had no major damage and said he felt the quake hit really hard as he was in his garage in Calixico around 30 miles east of the epicentre. He also noted that chandeliers rocked and objects clashed together but had no other damage at his home.
A game taking place at San Diego’s Petco Park between the Toronto Blue-Jays and San Diego Padres, was temporarily halted with an announcement asking for calm which the crowd responded to with cheers.
