Stephen Colbert Grills Jack White, Hosts Florence and the Machine

Stephen Colbert
This week, the hardest working man in rock 'n' roll is Stephen Colbert.

He hosted Bon Iver on Monday's episode of 'The Colbert Report,' and on Tuesday, he aired the first episode of a multi-part segment called '2011: A Rock Odyssey,' in which he visited Jack White's Third Man Records headquarters in Nashville. He also found time to welcome Florence and the Machine for a web-only interview and two-song performance (watch her discuss how she was discovered in a bathroom, courtesy of AOL TV).

As Colbert revealed, he wanted to meet with White so he could revive his singing career, or as he put it, "turn a has-been into a has-is." They bantered over White's integrity, their favorite Bob Seger songs and how the former White Stripes frontman should be selling his songs for product placement, turning the riff of 'Seven Nation Army' into a yogurt-hawking antehm of "yums." Check out the interview and a clip of Florence performing 'Dog Days Are Over' below.

Summer DVD Club: Six Feet Under, Episodes 4-6

Summer DVD Club
I thought these three episodes of Six Feet Under got progressively better, so I’m going to move quickly to get to the last one in this batch, “The Room.” In short: Brenda and Nate’s sexytimes were interrupted not just once by Ruth, but again, by Brenda’s parents. Nate got more committed to making the family express its emotions. David got dumped by Keith, and deserved it, then had an awkward time meeting new guys.

In the first extended sequence between Ruth and Claire, the two took a trip to see their respective cousins—a sickeningly sweet mother-daughter pair. It was a nice thesis-antithesis-synthesis setpiece: Ruth, distraught that she and Claire had grown so far apart, was at first enchanted with their relatives' relationship—the polar opposite of Ruth's relationship with her own daughter. But when the cousins' shallow perkiness began to wear thin, coupled with the threat of forced spin class, Ruth joined Claire in disgust, and the pair made a daring daybreak escape.

Speaking of, Claire has become a lot more likable. She’s gone quickly from "spoiled, annoying teenager" to "relatively naive girl who’s in short succession dated two atrocious dudes." In “The Room,” she's at her best yet, begrudgingly letting herself be used as a pillow by the grieving, cranky, flatulent widower. Claire, to Ruth, somewhat justifying her recent outbreaks: “I know stealing a foot is weird. But living in a house where a foot is available be stolen is weird.”

The case of who burned down that house has grown cold, by the way. The only reasonable suspects would have been Claire or Brenda, and both have denied it. So the culprit is either someone we know acting way out of character (this could include Claire or Brenda lying), or someone tangential or whom we’ve yet to meet. Of course, it's entirely possible that we’ll never find out; given that Six Feet Under's surrealist cutaways haven't yet had actual impact within the real world, I think it’d be neat if we end up with option #3.

So on to "The Room," which explored drastically hidden lives. We’ve seen a slow mystery develop around Brenda (“Nathaniel” tattooed around her back, taking an emergency call after hooking up with Nate in the house across the street, arranging a blind date between her parents and Nate), and the root cause is that she was a child prodigy. I guess that makes sense?

It turns out Brenda’s childhood genius meant that she was treated like a science experiment while growing up, and that her story became a book beloved by troubled teenage girls around the country—including Claire. This is a point of tension between her and Nate, but surely it's come up in every serious relationship Brenda’s ever had, so you’d imagine she’s learned to deal with it somewhat.

We also saw Nate discover a side of his father that he never knew. Nathaniel smoked pot, he traded funerals for favors, he was funny, he told people he was proud of Nate, and most importantly, he had a secret room where he listened to records—but what else he did in there isn’t clear. Nate imagined his dad having friends over, bringing a hooker there, shooting people from the window, but they’re all conjecture. I enjoyed seeing Nate mull over what it means that his dad told people he was proud of his oldest son:

Nate: You could have told me you were proud of me.

Nathaniel: You were never around for me to tell. Which is exactly what I was proud of you for.
But later...

Nate: You think running away was the best thing I ever did.

Nathaniel: Maybe. Maybe I was just covering up for how embarrassed I was when you left.

Nate doesn’t know how his dad really felt about him, and it seems like he never will. That the death of a loved one leaves a lot of loose ends was echoed in the side plot of the old man who’d lost his wife. These one-shot characters are starting to function like a Greek chorus for the Fisher family, nearly anonymous, but echoing what they can't say themselves.

Questions & Miscellanea:

... When David gave Kroener’s Matthew his semi-vicious threat, did you hear what was playing in the background? Love that song. Big Love fans, you probably remember Lilo singing it on a talk show.

... Bleach-blonde porn star Sandra Oh: Hot or not?

... The actress who played fictional porn star Vivica St. John in "An Open Book" is a real-life former porn star who used the stage name Veronia Hart. Hart was an inspiration for Julianne Moore's character in Boogie Nights.

... Between Nathaniel’s tendency to trade funerals for favors and David’s readiness to comp the old woman’s embalming fees, it looks like Fisher & Sons isn’t nearly as tightly run a business as it seemed.

... I’m standing by my gut reaction to the old widower: that he was used to illustrate, as I said above, the loneliness and lack of resolution people feel when a loved one dies. But since he ended up dying so soon after his wife, do you think the show is hinting that death offers some sort of order, after all?

10 Reasons Why True Blood Is Better Than the Books It's Based On

True Blood

I’ve watched every episode of HBO’s True Blood, which is about to kick off its fourth season, and I’ve read every one of the Sookie Stackhouse novels on which it's based. An eternity is not enough time to express my gratitude to Ms. Charlaine Harris for the best premise in Southern Gothic mythology in these United States. But True Blood creator Alan Ball has refined her story into something with more insight and intensity than the complete works of Charles Dickens, and the HBO drama has the notable honor of being a TV adaptation that’s even better than its very addictive source material.

This is not just my opinion, it's a science fact, and here are ten reasons why.

10. Eric’s hair
In the books, Vampire Sheriff Eric Northman’s hair is frequently described as being bound up in intricate braids. Seriously? Who would even do the braiding? Pam?

9. Sookie is not the narrator
Sookie Stackhouse narrates each one of the books in the first person, with a mix of charming naivete and sass. Anna Paquin’s Sookie is definitely the center of True Blood, but we aren’t tied to her perspective. We don’t stay shut up with her in the FOTS basement in Season 2, we go aboveground, check out Jason getting it on with the Preacher’s wife, go to Bon Temps and watch the town have orgies under the influence of the maenad. Basically any time you see someone onscreen and they’re not directly across from Sookie, it didn’t happen in the books, or they told her about it over coffee several weeks later.

8. There's no Bubba The vampire Bubba appears in the first couple of books, and Charlaine has to take pains to introduce him because for legal reasons she can't explicitly state that he’s a vampirized Elvis. But that's what he is. Alternately called the King or the Man from Memphis, he eats cats (just like Alf) and is almost crucified by the King of Louisiana. I know, I know.7. Lafayette

True Blood
Charlaine Harris created Lafayette’s character, gave him about two lines, and then killed him off in the first chapter of the second book. The True Blood Lafayette, played masterfully by Nelsan Ellis, is a main character and maybe the most compelling one on the show. An intensely masculine line cook who wears makeup to work could easily be written as a caricature, but Lafayette is a layered, three-dimensional person who’s survived torture, supported his demented mother and suicidal cousin, and begun a romance without any inconsistency of character or tone, a real feat for the TB writers.

6. We actually get to see things Look, we all have powerful imaginations. I love to read, I really do. But there’s something to be said for this:...versus, like, “Alcide was possessed of rough good looks.” AND True Blood films on location, AND it puts a lot of artistry and budget into its special effects. There's a visual joke or indelible image in every episode. Sorry books, Eyes have reported to Brain and TV takes the prize for best imagery.

5. Sound From the first gritty notes of that bluesy twang, the opening sequence locks down the world of the show in a way a thousand-thousand books never could. Hold that book up to your ear. What's that sound? Pages flipping? FAIL.Every episode is named for a song, too. I care about TV that cares about music.

4. Alan Ball’s original characters Some of the most engrossing characters, the ones who show us the most perspective on important story points, were created specifically for the show. Jessica Hamby, Bill’s forced vampire child, shows us what it means to become a modern vampire. Then there's Amy Burley, Jason’s V-addict girlfriend (who's played by the irresistible Lizzy Caplan); Eggs, Tara’s murdered fiancee; and the swamp witch from Season 1, just to name a few.3. Charlaine Harris’s original characters are better on the show Charlaine, I love you, but in your books Tara is a boring nobody who runs a store called Tara’s Togs, and she only shows up when Sookie wants discount clothes. At no point is she kidnapped by a vampire, tied to a toilet, dressed in an Old South gown, and then served flowers for dinner. Tara’s arc is so beyond surreal that if you’re not screaming at the television, you’re not paying enough attention. Which leads me to...

2. This:At no point in any of the books did we get to see a woman in a long lace nightgown knocked over by a werewolf on the lawn of a sprawling Southern estate. Like, what?

1. Bill loves Sookie more on TV In the books, Bill Compton is dispassionate. When Sookie is being chased through the graveyard by Rene in Dead Until Dark, Bill is caught up in an exciting computer project and hears about her attempted murder in the hospital. On the show, Bill wakes up, drawn to her panic, and walks through the daylight, bursting into flames, to try to save her. That was a powerful moment in the series, and it really gave their relationship the kind of credibility that carried them through the brutal third season. In the books, Bill runs off to join Lorena—he isn’t compelled. He’s kind of a butthole, he’s kind of heartless, he’s kind of a monster. I want to see the kind of romantic, death-defying love that an affair with the undead implies. I can get invested and deeply care about these fantastical creatures with crazy mythologies because Alan Ball grounds them in a bone-deep core of pure emotion. And that makes for some of the most humanistic writing and most three-dimensional characters outside of great literature, except they happen to be on TV. And half naked.True Blood Season 4 premieres this Sunday, June 27 at 9pm on HBO.

Tracy Morgan Has Officially Apologized for His Anti-Gay Rant. Was It Enough?

Tracy Morgan
Tracy Morgan indulged an ugly side of his psyche when he went on an anti-gay riff in Nashville a couple weeks ago. As relayed in a Facebook post by gay audience member Kevin Rogers that quickly went viral, the routine started with insinuations that all gays are gay by choice (because “God don’t make no mistakes”) and went on to make light of the anti-gay bullying that’s dominated headlines this year. Morgan didn’t stop there, though—he entered seriously dark, demented territory, saying, according to Rogers, that if his son was gay "he better come home and talk to me like a man" and not [Morgan mimicked a high-pitched voice], or he would pull out a knife and stab that little N [one word I refuse to use] to death. Morgan then said he "didn't f--king care" if he pissed off some gays, because "if they can take a f--king d-ck up their a--... they can take a f--king joke."

I repeat all of this just as a reminder that the routine wasn’t merely some off-color humor poking fun at gay people. It was a downright hateful and ugly string of thoughts. Morgan's comments were offensive enough to earn sternly worded condemnations from both Tina Fey and NBC head Robert Greenblatt.

Morgan returned to Nashville today to deliver an apology and statement of support for the LGBT community. Next to him was Rogers, and a representative from GLAAD, the gay media advocacy group who arranged this press conference. (It bears mentioning that GLAAD's repeat logo branding on the backdrop made the entire thing seem more than a little coerced.) Rogers explained he had “always assumed Tracy was an ally to the LGBT community,” making his shock over the routine all the greater. Then Morgan said he wanted to “apologize to Kevin and the people at the show for bumming them out. I want to apologize to my friends, family, and fans and every community who were offended with this. I didn’t know. I didn’t mean it. That’s how I feel about it. I don’t have a hateful bone in my body … I don’t care who you love, same sex or not. As long as you have the ability to love, that’s the important thing here.”

How to Deal With Tennis Elbow Pain?

Among the sports injuries, tennis elbow is one of the most painful conditions that athletes would want to avoid.

Tennis elbow pain is a result of repetitive stress on the tendons in the forearm. Tennis elbow pain is not only experienced by tennis players; in fact, people whose occupation require them to do constant gripping or hammering can also suffer from tennis elbow pain. Individuals who carry or lift too heavy objects in one hand or cause repeated actions that strains the ligaments on the outside of the elbow are also prone to tennis elbow.

Tennis elbow is definitely debilitating, the condition can last as much as six to 12 weeks making it difficult to hold even small objects such as a pen. The pain radiates down the arm to the wrist; thus, the arms can be very painful when bended or straightened due to the damage inflicted on the tendons.

Usa Tv Show
Live blogging the So You Think You Can Dance Meet the Top 20 Show!

They tweaked the stage a little bit! Still looks like a cave, but at least the ribs are no longer there. Hopefully this one works better.

Nigel Lythgoe explains that there will be a Top 20 this year, but at the Top 10 mark, they will re-introduce the All-Stars. From a previous conference call, he said that they will pair an All-Star depending on a dancer – so there won’t be a “permanent” set of All-Stars this year.

'Sister Wives' finale: Season 3 in Las Vegas with a new baby?

'Sister Wives
"Sister Wives" brought Season 2 to a close Sunday night (June 5) with a season finale that saw the entire 21-member Brown family packing up and leaving Utah, due to the investigation into their family.

The family moved to Las Vegas, NV and temporarily bunked in a four-bedroom vacation rental. Each wife got her own bedroom and the 16 children (minus the baby) were scattered hither and yon throughout the house. While the younger kids thought it was a great adventure, the older kids were not happy about being uprooted to Nevada. They did seem to understand, however, how important it was to leave Utah and to stay together as a family.

'American Idol' Report Card: Are Scotty And Haley Headed To The Finale?

If there's one thing we've learned during our "American Idol" studies this season, it's not to get lost in the extraneous trappings of the show — the over-the-top theatrics, the couldn't-be-less-enlightening-if-they-tried judges' commentary, the schmaltzy video packages meant to tug heartstrings and sway votes. That's because voters have shown an admirable ability and initiative to go it alone, voting for the singers they believe in, the singers they feel are the best, and ignoring all the distractions. It's as if, with Simon Cowell gone and producers seemingly attempting to micromanage the competition like never before, each viewer has decided, To hell with it, I'm gonna trust my own gut this time.

The 'SYTYCD' Top 8: Who's Going Home?

Just when we thought the most interesting thing is So You Think You Can Dance this week include a couple relationships, the unexpected happens: Alex Wong suffers injury.

And judging from what Nigel Lythgoe said yesterday evening, it can be serious: everyone is afraid that Alex suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, which would force him to the sidelines for months - and if the MRI results suggest, he can not run next week could end his drive show. Not really the best ending for the contestant we have been waiting two seasons run SYTYCD stage, right?

This makes the results pretty interesting evening. If Alex's injury proves serious, he can send home tonight, and although the judges are all saying, who will pack their bags at this stage, it is still possible that more than one dancer goes home today. Of course, if the doctors say he is just wonderful, one of the remaining finalists will go home - and judging from what the show last night, the guy is still going home.

So, as always, here is the result my weekly ritual: my bottom three, as well as John the bottom three and your bottom three are inferred from last night's poll. It is interesting how the dishes tonight off.
