World Population Day - 1974

World Population Day
1. Fertility is declining globally, heading toward replacement levels. This simply means that women are having fewer children. Although we continue to add more people in the world, population growth seems to be inexorably heading toward maintenance levels. The trend is fairly easy to identify: comparing the ratio of girls to boys in school versus the total fertility rate for the period 1960-2009, you can see that as girls become more prevalent in school, the fertility rate falls. Most of the high-population countries have already seen their population fertility rates fall under 3 births per woman. Managing total population growth is all about figuring out what the “replacement level” is for a population and getting as close to that as possible: it will vary, depending on the situation, but is typically between 2 and 3 babies per family. Very small shifts can lead to population aging or robust population growth. However, at this point the only top-30 population countries with fertility rates above 3 per woman are Sudan, Pakistan, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

World Population Day2. Infant mortality is declining globally as health improves. Since more children are surviving past the age of 5 and into childhood and youth, this means a natural increase in the population–many poorer nations used to have a lot more babies but infant mortality was very high, so the net population growth was lower. It also means that the population has begun to age a bit because once children are past the age of five the odds of their surviving into older age is higher.

3. Globally increasing life expectancy. In the 1960s, the world was dramatically divided between those countries with a life expectancy under about 50 years, and those with a life expectancy nearing 70. In the mix of the “top 30 countries,” only a small handful were in the latter category, and they were mostly Western: the United States, the UK, Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Spain, Argentina, and Japan. The remainder had life expectancies under 50 years. Indeed, many were closer to 40: Nigeria, the Dem. Repub. of the Congo, and Indonesia are examples. As the past half-century progressed, however, remarkable progress was made in raising the life expectancy. By the early 1990s the situation had all but reversed: the only countries with life expectancies lower than about 60 were Bangladesh, Sudan, Tanzania, Nigeria and the Congo. Today, the three holdouts are the Congo (wracked by war), Nigeria, and—in a stunning reversal—South Africa, which has been deeply scarred by the impact of HIV/AIDS.

Singapore has just experienced a 'watershed' General Election and many voters have commented about the government policies. Thus I think it is timely to show this stamp that reflected one of the much talked about policy of the Singapore government in its yester-years.

The stamp was issued in August 1974 (if I am not wrong the date is 9th August, our national day). There were 3 stamps (10 cents, 35 cents and 75 cents) and two of them bear this message 'Plan Your Family Small' at the top of the stamp). This was a commemorative issue for the World Population Year.

It was the national policy to control the population back then. Families were encouraged to keep their size small, and two children per family was preferred.

This of course is starkly different from the situation today, where the government is giving out major bonus to families in order to maintain or grow the population. The declining birth rate is used as a justification for the much discussed immigration policy.

Greece Confidence Vote: Prime Minister George Papandreou Survives

Greece Confidence Vote
The embattled government of Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou survived a crucial confidence vote Tuesday.

Parliament approved the new cabinet he formed to help pass the unpopular austerity measures with 155 votes out of 300. The government needed a simple majority of 151 for passage.

Failure to get that approval would have thrown into question whether Greece could pass a new austerity bill by the end of the month as demanded by international creditors before the country could get the next instalment of its bailout — funds the country needs to avoid default.

Thousands of anti-austerity protesters massed outside parliament to hear the outcome of the vote. Many booed and chanted "Thieves" as the vote was taken. Riot police stood by.

Even more seriously, a defeat would have prompted selling in the shares in the foreign banks exposed to Greek debt. Because it isn't clear exactly how much exposure those banks have, the markets were expected to sell first and ask questions later.

Global markets have been volatile in recent weeks on worries that Greece would default on its huge debts and stoke fears over the public finances of other euro countries, such as Portugal, Ireland and Spain.

Papandreou was forced to reshuffle his cabinet last week following a major political crisis that saw him face an open rebellion from within his own party and initiate talks to form a coalition government with the opposition, which eventually collapsed.

2011 Hurricane Season Will Be Above Average, Top Meteorologists Say Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/05/19/2011-hurricane-season-noaa-f

The nation's top meteorologists issued their 2011 hurricane-season forecast Thursday, predicting a serious and above-average season -- though not one as tumultuous as the violent 2010 season.

Hurricane season for the western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico begins June 1 and lasts through Nov. 30. That's when about 90 percent of the storms make themselves present. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned that this year's season will be above average, with as many as 10 hurricanes blasting their 110 mile per hour winds across the area.

Obama Addresses 'Extraordinary Change' in Middle East, North Africa

U.S. President Barack Obama has welcomed the "extraordinary change" taking place in the Middle East and North Africa, but said too many countries have met the calls for change with violence.

Obama, speaking Thursday at the State Department, said the most extreme example is Libya, where he said Moammar Gadhafi launched a war against his own people. He said thousands of people would have been killed in Libya if the United States and its partners did not act.

He said Syria has also chosen the "path of murder and mass arrests." Obama called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to either lead a transition to democracy or "get out the way." He called on the Syrian government to stop shooting protestors, allow peaceful protests and stop unjust arrests.

In Tatkal booking section IRCTC check for 2 day from today and if journey date is beyond 2 day from
Today then IRCTC do not allow to book ticket.
here comes the problem....

Some Train reach destination station after 2-3 days and different station have then own quota in same train and date change for same Train number from different stations.
Like : Train Number 12321 [Howrah Mumbai mail]
Start from HOWRAH and ends at MUMBAI and reach MUMBAI at 2nd day of journey

IF i book ticket today (24/3/2011) then IRCTC allow me to book TATKAL of journey date 26/3/2011.

IF 12321 start from HOWRAH on 26/3/2011 at 10 PM
so date become change from DURGAPUR means same train arrive at DURGAPUR at 27/3/2011

1st view of tsunami by coast Guard

Hitting the wave: The tsunami rears up in front of a Japanese coast guard vessel in an otherwise clam pacific

This is the moment a Japanese Coast Guard ship was confronted by the tsunami that hit the coast of Japan on Friday.
Amazing video footage shows a huge wave looming on the horizon of an otherwise calm Pacific.

The wall of water was created by an earthquake off the coast of Japan, and it is believed to be the first footage of the tsunami in the open ocean.
But as their ship safely rode the wave, its crew were powerless to do anything but warn their countrymen it was on its way.

Alam Ara: 80 years since Indian Talkies began

Eighty years ago, Indian cinema achieved a landmark on this day when director Ardeshir Irani made Alam Ara, the first ever Indian film with sound. The film also marked the beginning of filmi music.

Alam Ara was first screened at the Majestic Cinema in Bombay on March 14, 1931. It ran for two hours and four minutes, and used a Tanar Sound System to record the dialogues.

Irani recognised the importance that sound would have on the cinema, and raced to complete Alam Ara before several other contemporary sound films. The film was based on a Parsi play written by Joseph David. David later served as a writer for Irani's film company.

March 14, 2011, is a special day for Indian cinema. It marks the 80th anniversary of Alam Ara - the first Indian film with sound.

On this day in 1931, Alam Ara debuted at the Majestic Cinema in Mumbai causing such frenzy among the audience that the police had to be called in.

Alam Ara
Alam Ara also featured the first song of Indian cinema, De De Khuda Ke Naam Par, sung by actor Wazir Mohammed Khan.

The film, directed by Ardeshir Irani, is a love story between a prince and a gypsy girl and was based on a Parsi play.

The sad part, however, is that as a result of a fire at the National Film Archive of India at Pune in 2003, the last surviving print of Alam Ara was destroyed, and the film is no longer available in its original format.

This Pune based film maker is credited with Alam Ara for bringing talkies to India, just four years after the introduction of talking movies in America. Though the credit stands, there is not a single copy of Alam Ara after the last prints of the movie were destroyed in a fire in 2003 at the National Film Archives, Pune. The Indian Government till this day regularly advertises to seek anyone who might have a copy of the movie.

Alam Ara was based on a play by Joseph David about a king and his two wives who compete with each other to give birth to the kingdom's heir. The tale, mixed with romance, infidelity and action, was a treat to the ears with its evergreen songs. One among them was the 'De De Khuda Ke Naam Par' which is the mother of all Indian songs. Alam Ara, which means 'The light of the world' in Urdu, was truly instrumental in bringing light and 'sound' to Indian cinema.

Japan's nuclear crisis: the causes and the risks

Japan's nuclear
A British nuclear expert has told The First Post that the explosion at the Fukushima I nuclear plant looks likely to be a "significant nuclear event" with a bigger impact on public health than the 1979 meltdown at Three Mile Island.

John Large, who has been a nuclear analyst since the mid-1960s and is a Fellow of the Royal Society, says the Japanese government may be significantly downplaying the seriousness of the accident – and he believes it could have far-reaching consequences for the nuclear industry worldwide.

Mamata Banerjee’s Bengal friendly railway budget for 2011-12

New Delhi, Feb 25 (Calcutta Tube / IBNS) With an eye on the crucial assembly elections in West Bengal, Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee presented a populist no-hike, Bengal-friendly Railway Budget for 2011-12 amid noisy scenes and protests from Bihar lawmakers.

There was no hike in passenger fare or freight as the Minister presented a populist budget as anticipated.

Mamata Banerjee

On expected lines Mamata Banerjee declared more projects for West Bengal, amid protests by Bihar leaders like Lalu Prasad and Sharad Yadav

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called it a common man’s budget, while the Opposition criticized it with the communists, her political rivals in West Bengal, slamming the minister for failing to implement the earlier projects she announced.

She said the metro railway network of Kolkata will expand while a metro coach factory will be set up near Singur and a rail industrial park in Nandigram in West Bengal.

She admitted that the Railway is passing through a difficult phase and announced to raise Rs 10,000 crore via bonds.

She also announced shelters for thousands of homeless, giving a human face to the budget.

Across India, however, passengers reacted to lack of safety measures for passengers.

“It is an election budget. I am happy with the projects and trains announced but passenger safety has been ignored as before,” said a commuter at Howrah Station in Kolkata.

A total of 56 new express trains were proposed in the Railway Budget.

Three Shatabdi Trains will be introduced in the coming fiscal year. These proposed new Shatabdis are: Pune-Secunderabad, Jaipur-Agra and Ludhiana-Delhi.

Mumbai Central-New Delhi AC Duronto (bi-weekly); Nizamuddin-Ajmer non-AC Duronto (bi-weekly) and Shalimar-Patna Duronto (tri-weekly).

Mamata Banerjee announced that 1000 km of three sections will be electrified during the ensuing financial year. The sections on which electrification work will be taken up are
Vizianagaram-Rayagada-

Titlagarh-Raipur, Rosa-Sitapur-Burhwal and Alwar-Rewari.
Feasibility studies will be taken up for other sections, she said.

Mamata said a Central Organization for Project Implementation (COPI) will be set up with offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore to ensure timely project execution and proper utilization of funds allotted for works.

10 Mistakes Everyone Should Make Before They Die

Life's toughest lessons are learned by making mistakes. It's what we learn from our experiences, the good, the bad, the ugly, that matter most. Have some fun with these tongue in cheek common mistakes that (we think) everyone should commit at least once in a lifetime.

1. Getting married
Everyone should take a trip down the aisle or stand before the justice of the peace just once in their lifetime. The Wedding March may very well be the opportunity to spend the rest of your life in wedded bliss...or could be a very expensive yet vital experiment in disaster. Either way, consider it a lesson learned

2. Getting hopelessly, falling down drunk

At least once in your life, drink far too much and just let loose. Pour down the shots of tequila. Dance on the bar. Just be careful as drinking excessively has severely negative impacts on your health (albeit a nasty hangover.) And as always, if you drink, don't drive. Few things are more expensive than a D.W.I. or regret.

3. Driving the wrong way on a one way street or highway

Taking a wrong turn and driving into oncoming traffic is quickly remedied with a u-turn so have no fear. The thrill of playing chicken to the sound of furious motorists is often short lived, as the men in blue find this driving offense ticket worthy.

4. Falling down in public

Taking a trip and landing flat on your face or bottom is a great way to learn how to laugh at yourself. And also a great way to garner laughter from innocent bystanders. Either way, falling down in public is a vital and important process in coming to terms with our infallibility.

5. The "sneeze and shake"

Whether intentional or not, we've all made the mistake of sneezing into your hand or wiping your nose and then shaking hands with someone. On the gross factor scale, this one ranks rather highly. And in terms of hilarity, it's off the charts. If you haven't already executed the "sneeze and shake," throw it on your list of things to do soon.

6. Reading a lousy book

We've all found ourselves caught in the pages of a terrible book, rereading the same paragraph over and over again, wondering if we should give up or keep going. keep trudging ahead. If nothing else, that copy of Eat, Pray, Love will make great kindle for your fire when you're through.

7. Singing karaoke

Nothing belts a good time better than screaming the lyrics of your favorite song in the company of folks who can't sing any better than you. Just be sure to load up on the booze (see #2 on this list) and perhaps stuff some cotton balls into your pockets for those "karaokers" who can't carry a tune to save your ears from splitting.

8. Workplace romance

Perhaps the biggest faux pas to commit is engaging in a workplace romance. The inherit lesson one can learn from committing such an offense is more beneficial than not. By all means, flirt away. Just tread carefully and learn from the experience. And, as a word of warning, polluting the waters of the job pool is often frowned upon by higher ups and makes for an awkward work environment after the romance fades

9. "Losing" your child's pet or saying it ran away

We've all been here: waking up one morning to the sound of your daughter's chirping parakeet with your head screaming "I can't stand this bird!" Or you notice your son's fish doing the dead man's float. Whatever the case, disposing of the pet claiming it was lost or ran away may be the most humble way to delay the life experience of death.

10. Pulling a one night stand

Maybe you're freshly dumped, maybe you're just in the need of a little human touch. Whatever the case may be, pulling a one night stand may very well be one of life's greatest learning experiences. One night stands can go either way: they may build you up if you've been wounded in love but they also may be highly destructive.

Bonus Mistake

Nothing adds to allure and bragging rights faster than a trip to jail courtesy of the police car express. So you mooned a neighbor. Over consumed alcohol and flashed a friend. Or pulled a little breaking and entering to propel your career in pranks. Whatever the case, whatever the reason for handcuffs, getting arrested lends a colorful story to tell over and over again

Thomas Edison’s 164th Birthday Celebrated With Google Logo

Thomas Edison
Days after your logo celebrated the birthday of writer Jules Verne, your home-page Google Doodle today marks the 164th birthday of Thomas Edison.

At this rate, a user could become accustomed to equally inventive logos every morn.

Google is featuring a special Google logo, also known as Google Doodle, for the 164th birthday of Thomas Edison. The logo illustrates some of Edison’s most famous inventions including the electric light bulb, phonograph, and the motion picture camera. Edison holds over 1,000 U.S. patents and is the most well-known inventor of all time.

Our favorite touch about today's animated logo is the luminous light bulb that brightens and fades, spotlighting the inventor's electric-light contributions. The catch, of course, is that it was Britain's Edward Swan who "invented" the light bulb; but it was Edison who patented and popularized the electric light bulb in the United States. (Edison and Swan are said to have later merged their cross-the-Pond companies.)

Prior to his death in 1931, the Wizard of Menlo Park held more than 1,000 patents, including for electrical printing machines, telephone technology, motion-picture cameras, mechanical vote-recorders, the stock ticker and the phonograph.
